118th Boston Marathon

teamJAF2014

JH_2014_NPP_logo_blue

On April 21, 2014, the Joe Andruzzi Foundation will once again be tackling cancer with each stride when our 47 “Team JAF” runners take to the streets of Boston for the 118th Boston Marathon® – all to raise money in support of our mission of providing help, hope and a reason to smile for cancer patients and their families. Team JAF runners will also be spreading JAF’s (Up)Beat philosophy, stressing the power and importance of positivity.

Runner fundraising is once again being led by CharityTeams nonprofit consultant Susan Hurley, who helped the Foundation exceed its 2013 goal by raising more than $172,000 in the face of tragedy. Team JAF will also be sponsored by our supporters at East Commerce Solutions, Inc. for the second consecutive year!

Donations to Team JAF can be made through the Foundation’s Crowdrise page. Be sure to track Team JAF throughout the Marathon training process by visiting our Twitter and Facebook pages, the JAF blog, and the #TeamJAF hashtag.

The 2014 Joe Andruzzi Foundation Team is only accepting applications from registered 2014 Boston Marathon qualified runners, 2013 B.A.A. deferral runners, and invitational entry runners. All charity bibs have been filled.

For the past three years I have watched members of our incredible Team JAF runners relentlessly train and cross the Boston Marathon finish line with enormous smiles on their faces and such a sense of accomplishment about themselves. I always wondered what that would feel like – I can’t wait to find out for myself this April. My desire to run with Team JAF this year has been fueled by a longstanding Foundation motto – to ‘pay-it-forward’ – and I’m excited to cross the finish line in honor of all our runners, volunteers, employees and supporters, as well as the victims and medical professionals that were profoundly affected by last April's events.

Running the Boston Marathon has always been a bucket list item of mine. Going to school in Boston, I would take the short walk down to the finish line every third Monday in April and cheer on all the runners. I always imagined what an awesome feeling that must be. What happened at last year's marathon upset me quite a bit. Marathon Monday is such a great day to be in Boston and I was furious that someone would try to take that away. The next day I signed up for my first half marathon (which I completed in August) and started researching what it takes to get into the Boston Marathon. A few months later, I'm fortunate enough to be part of the Joe Andruzzi Foundation team and training to run my first marathon. Most of all, I get to be part of Boston getting back on its feet.

At 2:15 PM on April 15, 2013 – after 3 hours 24 minutes and 11 seconds – I crossed the blue and yellow Boston Marathon finish line on Boylston Street. I was proud of my time, and even prouder that I had raised a substantial amount of money for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation. At 2:51 PM in the afternoon, as I walked down Boylston towards the Foundation’s watch party at FORUM, our city was bombed before my eyes. The 2014 Boston Marathon will be even more special to me. Although I have moved away from home to the University of Notre Dame, my heart is still in Boston. My goal is to raise more money than I did last year, being the top fundraiser for this team. The passion, dedication and success that this foundation embodies are without a match. Having been able to meet a number of the patients who benefit from this money has been quite a privilege and honor and has only strengthened my love for JAF. I can’t wait to get back to Boston, Boston Strong and better than ever.

Because of cancer, my kids never got to meet my mom. I’m honored to run in the 2014 Boston Marathon as part of the Joe Andruzzi Foundation Team, committed to providing help, hope, and a reason to smile for cancer patients and their families by contributing financial and emotional support when it is needed most. Throughout her multi-year battle, my mom maintained an “(Up)Beat” attitude, her sense of humor and a positive spirit that to this day still inspires me.  In fact, I still specifically remember her saying to me one very sad day when I was visiting her after school, “you have much more to do in this life than to worry about my cancer.” Of course, she was my mom, and she understood me better than anyone and knew exactly what I needed to hear to get me back on track again. On the 20 year anniversary of her death, I will run the 2014 Boston Marathon in memory of this incredibly special person and all of my friends and family that are fighting against this terrible disease every day.

I strongly believe in helping others, and I have gained a lot of respect for Joe over the years, following him through the news, the work he has done with his foundation and after the events of April 15, 2013.  I feel compelled this year to join the JAF Marathon team, spread its mission and raise funds to support the foundation. The events of April 15, 2013 have had a profound effect on me, and I hope that partnering with the great team at the Joe Andruzzi Foundation, training and the marathon will help heal and give me closure.

I'm back at it again! As many of you know, the 2013 Boston Marathon was to be my 50th marathon in my 50th state....and well, it didn't go as planned. But that minor setback won't stop me. I'll be attempting to finish the states (officially) in Boston in 2014.The Andruzzi’s have taught me that leading a charitable life is rewarding, and that I can do without a luxury to give to others that are less fortunate than myself. Having watched my uncle battle cancer (and lose), I cannot think of a better cause to support. Your donation is not only important to me, but the Foundation as well. Please know that no donation is too small and will be greatly appreciated!

I have decided to support Team JAF and walk the BAA 5K held the Saturday before the Marathon. My favorite sport is cycling, but I wouldn't want to run anyone over on the route so I will WALK and raise money for the Foundation with my head held high. Your donations are in direct support of cancer patients who are fighting for their lives and trying to pay their bills at the same time. I truly appreciate your support!

We are proud to represent this amazing foundation in its quest to provide help, hope and a reason to smile for cancer patients and their families. As you may already know, we have been touched by cancer and are fortunate to be on the other side with the ability and privilege to help others.  We have both run for JAF--Rich in the 2012 and 2013 Boston Marathons, and Deana in the 2012 and 2013 Falmouth Road Races. Our quest continues in 2014 with a renewed dedication to helping cancer patients and their families, especially in the face of animosity that struck the 2013 Boston Marathon.  So, we are lacing up our sneakers (or Five Fingers) and training together for the first time to do our part in giving back!

In 2013, I began a journey with The Joe Andruzzi Foundation. On April 15th, we were at Forum, with happy hearts and bright smiles.  At 2:50pm that afternoon, my heart broke, my smile faded and our journey stopped. In 2014, I will help finish that journey we started before our lives were changed forever.  I am honored to be running with Team JAF this year to help raise money to support the JAF mission. I am running for my Forum family. I am running so I know I will never forget. Strength does not lie in what you have, it lies in what you can give!

Here I go again! While I had always said that the 2013 Boston Marathon would be my last, the events that stopped me from crossing the finish line in 2013 meant that I need to come back and finish what I started.

I am running for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation again this year, and I couldn't imagine a more deserving charity to support. By providing financial support to families affected by cancer, they are doing their part to help families spend time together and tackle cancer head on. Families can concentrate on keeping an (Up)Beat attitude and defeating their disease and not on having to worry about where the next mortgage payment is coming from.

I am honored to be invited to run the 2014 Boston Marathon with the Joe Andruzzi Foundation. This is my first Boston Marathon, and I am thrilled to be part of such an amazing team with a common goal of raising money to support patients and families fighting cancer. Cancer has taken some wonderful people from me. Although it feels like it could have been yesterday, this June it will be twenty years since my “Nana Donahue” lost her battle with brain cancer. She was energetic, loving, kind and so supportive of me and my brothers. I can think of no better way to honor her memory or to help those fighting the disease today than to take part in helping raise money with the Joe Andruzzi Foundation.

I first met Joe Andruzzi at Dana Farber Cancer Institute where he had the courage to battle Burkitt's Lymphoma with the same perseverance and intensity that earned him three Super Bowl rings! Then, what he and Jen did was turn their own experience into a noble cause. Who is the real wind beneath my wings? That's Mom! If you are reading this then you most likely know of her courageous battle against colon cancer. She never let cancer prevent her from making someone's day better with a smile. Now you know "how on earth I can be smiling after running 26 miles."

My motivation for wanting to run for this cause is fueled by the many friends and family members I’ve seen battle cancer. Most importantly, I lost my Dad to it a few years ago. I know exactly how difficult it is as well as the struggles families face when dealing with the ups and downs of this illness. I had the opportunity to speak with Joe at a Patriots game last year and heard about what the Foundation is all about. I was immediately touched by what JAF does for patients and families and couldn't be happier having the opportunity to contribute myself.

I recently attended a Joe Andruzzi Foundation event and was moved to the point of tears hearing from families struggling with cancer. The help that Joe and his team give to these families who are caring for their loved ones battling cancer is second to none. After that night, remembering my personal experiences with family members and friends who battled cancer and what they went through as well as their families, I decided that I would run the 118th Boston Marathon for a reason. I would run in honor of those who are battling or have battled cancer. I would run to try and make a small difference in somebody’s life. I would run for your family and friends who have been affected by this disease. Let me run in memory of your loved ones that have had to deal with this horrific disease. Please share your stories, so that on every practice run, every hill we climb, every mile we run, and especially when we cross the finish line, we will be thinking of them, and they will be remembered.

This is my first marathon! JAF is one of the only Foundations I have ever consistently given back to and have raced with previously.  After last year’s tragedy, I got a rush of motivation, especially since my good friends Gill Furey and Eddie O’Brien (who were representing JAF) where right at the scene of the chaos.  I was inspired not only on a personal level, but also with the intent to represent such an amazing organization in a city that feels like home and with people that feel like family.  My fundraising goal is $7,500. I plan on reaching this goal by being creative and consistent in reaching out to as many people as possible!

I am honored to have been chosen to be a part of the Joe Andruzzi Foundation Marathon Team.  On April 21st I will be running in my first Boston Marathon. Crossing the finish line will be a huge accomplishment but my true goal is to raise $12,000 for this incredible foundation to help families in need. Like most of us, I have seen too many friends and family members fight cancer and all of the challenges that come along with it. I was inspired to do this by our close friend Christy who is bravely fighting cancer for the second time and all along has never lost her positive attitude. She's an amazing person and is everything JAF stands for.

I am excited and honored to be running in the 118th Boston Marathon, raising funds to benefit the Joe Andruzzi Foundation. Of course, I wasn't planning to run another Boston Marathon at all. I ran last year to make up for an abysmally hot and slow run in 2011. My second time out was fantastic - perfect weather, amazingly supportive crowds, and so meaningful to be running through the city that I still think of as home even after over two decades in NYC. My sister was even working at the finish line to give me a hug when it was over! As my smile in the photo suggests, it was a perfect and wonderful day...until it turned into a tragic and horrible one. I have to and want to go back and run that course one more time, so I'll be back in Hopkinton on April 21st, running to raise funds for an organization that I feel a strong connection with.

We do not consider ourselves avid runners, but after experiencing the Marathon events of last year first hand, we are motivated more than ever to complete this challenge. We both are lucky to be healthy and able to run - so WE will RUN! We will run to not only support The Joe Andruzzi Foundation, but also to help show how resilient both Boston and JAF are!

In April of 2014, I'll be running the Boston Marathon (again!).  Last year I ran to get in shape and to support a cause I deeply believe in - JAF. This year we have additional motivation - to do our small part to show the world that we are "Boston Strong" and that we are stronger than ever! My wife and I were introduced to Jen and Joe a number of years ago, and have been honored to support JAF ever since. If you can, and you'd like to, please donate – no matter how little. This year’s Boston Marathon will be my first marathon. The events of last year really motivated me to run this year for the first time. Like lots of other people, each year I would party at the Marathon and tell myself that I'm going to run it next year. Somehow that desire disappears in January when it's so easy just to sleep in on a cold, snowy morning. My decision to run was also made as part of my personal PTSD recovery. Startle response is an uninvited condition that I work through every day and training for the Marathon appears to have made it less. With running, I am forced to go back to April 15th and work through so many things that I saw in the hope of being myself again. Running the route during trainings and passing Forum allows me to embrace my fears and anxieties and become stronger because of them.

2014 will be my sixth Boston Marathon, but this one will have the most meaning. Cancer has changed my life, and my outlook on life, in a way I never imagined. In September of 2012 I was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer. I wanted to run the 2013 Boston Marathon (again) after turning 40. However, cancer put a wrench in this plan. Due to undergoing two rounds of chemo/radiation and 2 surgeries over the last 16 months, this goal had to be put on hold. My cousin Stephanie and friend Paul both ran marathons in honor of me last year. Stephanie ran Boston for Dana Farber and Paul ran the Phoenix Marathon. This year Stephanie and I will be crossing the finish line in Boston together. Stephanie and Paul ran for me in 2013. I will be running for my dad this year, who – in July of 2013, as I was in the hospital recovering from my second cancer surgery – was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The 2013 Boston Marathon was to be my first marathon. Although I was not able to officially complete the race, and it did not turn out the way I planned, the journey leading up to that day was both challenging and rewarding. The challenges I faced during training are nothing compared to the challenges families face every day when they have a loved one battling cancer. That's where The Joe Andruzzi Foundation comes in. Your donation will help a family pay bills that can become a burden while going through this tough time. I am proud to say that the money I raised last year helped nearly 10 families! I can only hope that I can repeat what I was able to do last year. I am running the 2014 Boston Marathon in honor of those past and present who have courageously fought their battle.

Having watched several family members bravely battle cancer, I—and, sadly, many of you—know firsthand how difficult that battle can be for both the patient and his or her family.  I know how much help, hope and support means during these trying times.  As a result, I am honored and excited to be running on behalf of Team JAF and to assist The Joe Andruzzi Foundation in providing invaluable support to many people so desperately need. Less than two weeks after receiving the exciting news, my invitation took on particular meaning when I learned that my mother had lung cancer. I am running in honor of her and her ongoing fight (which she is winning) and my sister, who beat thyroid cancer, and in memory of my aunt, Debbie’s grandfather, and Debbie's grandmothers, all of whom bravely battled cancer during their lives. I would be honored if you join me in supporting the invaluable work of The Joe Andruzzi Foundation.

The Andruzzi family is very dear to me, and it is an honor to fundraise on behalf of their commitment to provide help, hope and financial assistance to cancer patients in need. Our families met 13 years ago when my husband, Grey, played with Joey and the New England Patriots. Jen and I quickly bonded and it was the start of a lifelong friendship. Although our time with the Patriots was short and Grey and Joey’s professional careers took us to different parts of the country, we remained very good friends, making annual off-season trips to visit one another. I have never done a marathon before and I am doing this in honor of JAF, the city of Boston and my family.

When I took my first steps in the 2013 Boston Marathon, I was thrilled to be finishing something I had worked so hard for two years to achieve.  After an injury prevented me from running in 2012, Boston 2013 was going to be “the year.”  Sadly, we all know what happened on April 15, 2013; we know the tragedy that struck this city and its people. But, we also know the many stories of the heroes on that day. During the 2013 Boston Marathon, I was stopped at 25.5 mile mark. So I’m back and I’m ready!! What’s better is that I’m raising money and providing help, hope, and a reason to smile for cancer patients and their families with financial and emotional support when it is needed most.

I am absolutely thrilled to be part of the 2014 Joe Andruzzi Foundation (JAF) Boston Marathon Team and the opportunity to help through fundraising efforts. As a supporter of JAF, my family and I had tickets to attend last year’s fundraiser at Forum on Boylston Street. Needless to say, we never made it to the event. Several of our friends were already at the fundraiser at the time of the second bombing and witnessed the horror unfold in front of them. As I write this, I’m feeling very, very blessed that my family was safe, but the impact of the day’s events left me with a sense of determination to remain Boston Strong and support a meaningful cause.

Last year's marathon was an amazing experience. I raised money for those in need, battled through a few injuries and some tough long runs, and then gave out a whole lot of high-fives during the race. But then I was stopped at the corner of Boylston and Hereford due to the unthinkable acts that were committed just down the street. This year, my goal is the same as last year, but the outcome will be very different. I plan to finish what I started in 2013, and I also plan to once again raise at least $5,000 for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation to help those affected by cancer.
