(Up)Beat (Up)Date
It’s a sobering thought that we even need a day like World Cancer Day (February 4)—a global acknowledgment of cancer in all its forms and the many ways we must fight it. But at the Joe Andruzzi Foundation, we don’t just recognize the challenges of cancer one day a year—we lean in every single day to support New England cancer patients in the most tangible ways.
Our mission is simple but critical: to ensure patients can begin and complete their treatment by relieving the financial stress that often stands in the way. This allows them to focus on their health—not how they’ll pay their next bill.
The numbers tell a sobering story:
More than 50% of cancer patients experience financial distress.
1 in 3 families battling cancer incurs debt due to treatment costs.
42% of patients deplete their life savings within two years of diagnosis.
At JAF, we think of ourselves as being in the corner of both the patient and the healthcare workers, providing extra support for the needs and expenses that can sometimes be overlooked or foregone because of a cancer diagnosis but are essential to a patient’s well-being. Every day, our WHY is clear—to bring help, hope, and smiles to cancer patients.
As spring whispers in our ears and the snow melts, we invite you to join us in the weeks ahead as our calendar fills up with opportunities to engage. Whether by attending an upcoming event or introducing us to your community, we’d love to work together to expand our impact. JAF is doing good in the world, and we welcome you to join us.
Sincerely,
Jen Andruzzi
President and CEO
Nutrition Matters on a Cancer Journey
The Joe Andruzzi Foundation (JAF) Programs Manager Kirstin Borczynski sat down to speak with Melissa Gilman, a registered dietitian with Sodexo at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, MA, about what she encounters daily in her role. Melissa has been a dietitian for over 30 years across various specialties, with 15 years in the oncology field. Melissa consults with oncology patients, including many who apply to JAF’s programs.

One More Day To Send Hope to a Patient
Cupid Joe may have hung up his bow and arrow for another year, but there is still one more day to help the Joe Andruzzi Foundation “Power Love.” You can help JAF provide financial support for utilities, which is vital at this time of year since paying heating bills is one of the most significant challenges families face.
Thanks to everyone who participated this year, whether by liking and sharing JAF posts on our social channels or generously sending Cupid Joe messages to loved ones.
When you make a gift of $10 or more by the end of the day tomorrow, February 28, you’ll also be eligible for our raffle drawing for one of five $10 Honey Dew gift cards.

Decide to make a difference this year by joining the Joe Andruzzi Foundation’s (JAF) Bridge Builder Giving Society.
As a Bridge Builder, your monthly contribution will bridge the gap for New England cancer patients by providing financial support as they navigate the challenges of cancer treatment. For a nominal donation each month, you can help to ensure JAF will be there for those most vulnerable with nowhere to turn for financial help, a grant from JAF can bring much needed relief and peace of mind.
Together we can bring help, hope, and a reason to smile to cancer patients and their families throughout the year.
Get Ready, Rhode Island!
Mark your calendars – 401Gives is coming up on April 1, 2025! This exciting event will rally support for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation (JAF) among Rhode Islanders to meet the rising demand for critical financial assistance to New England cancer patients and their families–any age, any cancer.
Did you know that in 2024 JAF provided the following assistance to Rhode Island residents:
-
96 Financial Assistance Grants equaling $60,915
-
119 Food Security Grants totaling more than $25,900
-
6 Extraordinary Need Grants totaling nearly $8,908
-
228 Lyft rides to treatment valued at more than $5,122
JAF provides meaningful help to Rhode Island patients every day and we want to continue removing financial barriers to treatment. So, please consider giving to JAF on April 1.
Champions Circle brings together companies committed to helping neighbors, colleagues, and friends when they need it most. Is this the year your business will get involved and champion cancer patients in your community?
One of the key benefits to a company when supporting a charitable cause or a community event is that it often boosts employee morale. When a company partners with a local non-profit, it allows for increased community involvement and typically provides access to new initiatives and a wider network of individuals and organizations.
Remember, doing good is good for business! Lift your teams’ spirits by joining JAF’s Champions Circle today! Contact Barbara Foley at barbara@joeandruzzifoundation.org.
